Rebuild Wayanad: Biriyani Challenge

MMCE Supports Wayanad Landslide Victims

In a heartfelt response to the devastating landslide in Puthoor Mala, Wayanad, Kerala, the Malayali Muslim Cultural Association of Edmonton (MMCE) united to offer meaningful support to those affected.

The initiative, called the “Biriyani Challenge,” was proposed by community member Ansari and embraced by the MMCE team with strong backing from local sponsors and generous donors. This creative and delicious fundraiser aimed to bring the Edmonton community together while raising much-needed aid for families impacted by the natural disaster.

How It Worked

MMCE volunteers dedicated their time and energy to carefully plan and execute the event. Gafoorkka’s Thattukada prepared and packed the biriyani at a reasonable cost, and MMCE volunteers distributed it across various neighborhoods in Edmonton during two planned weekends in August 2024.

The event saw wide participation and generous contributions from MMCE members and residents from across diverse communities. Not only did the initiative strengthen bonds locally, but it also extended a lifeline to those in dire need back home.

Impact and Fund Distribution

After covering the cost of food preparation, a total of $4,702.87 CAD (approximately ₹2,80,650 INR) was allocated to directly assist victims of the landslide. Beneficiaries were identified – irrespective of religion, caste or creed – with the help of trusted individuals from the affected area, and funds were distributed. We truly made a difference to the lives of 6 different families!

A Collective Effort with Real Impact

This initiative is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with compassion and purpose. MMCE extends heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participants who made this effort possible.

Let us continue to support and uplift one another — both near and far.
