In Loving Memory of Our Brother Uwais

On July 3rd 2021, while accompanying several families on a weekend trip, our dear brother and valuable community member Uwais Mohammed Qasim was involved in an accident that changed our lives forever.

As he rowed a raft with one of the children from our group, it overturned. In those critical moments, Uwais did what he always did — put others first. He acted with courage and selflessness, ensuring the child was safely passed to others nearby. But while attempting to swim back to shore himself, Uwais tragically drowned. Despite the swift response of emergency services, his body was not recovered until the afternoon of July 4th.

Uwais, originally from Kasargod, Kerala, India, had made Edmonton his home and was a beloved member of our community here. He worked at Walmart Clareview and was known for his tireless dedication both at work and within our circles. A loving father to his young son, and a son and brother to a grieving family back in India, Uwais was the sole breadwinner for his family — a responsibility he carried with strength and humility.

More than that, he was a beacon of kindness, generosity, and faith. He was especially close to the children in our group, teaching them the Quran and Islamic studies, always showing up with warmth, patience, and a heart full of love. His loss has left an enormous void in our lives — one that can never truly be filled.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, we were moved by the incredible outpouring of support from near and far. We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who contributed to the fundraiser organized for Uwais’s family. Your generosity not only eased some of the financial burden but reminded us that in moments of loss, we are never alone.

We are also immensely grateful to the RCMP, the search and rescue teams, and every volunteer who helped with the search and recovery efforts. Your courage, compassion, and commitment will never be forgotten.

As we remember Uwais, we urge everyone to remain vigilant around open water and to prioritize safety — wear life jackets, stay aware of conditions, and look out for one another.

May Uwais Mohammed Kasim be remembered not only for the life he lived but for the life he gave in saving another. We pray for peace and strength for his family and invite our wider community to continue supporting them in the difficult journey ahead.

Thank you for standing with us. May his memory be a source of light and inspiration for us all.

From all of us in the community who were blessed to know and love Uwais
